"SWAIN, Jeremiah, major and doctor, son of Jeremiah and Mary, b. 1643; m. 1664, Mary Smith, and succeeded to his father's homestead; was physician, selectman, justice of the peace, representative, assistant to the Governor, captain, major, etc. ; had the command of a regiment that was sent against the Eastern Indians; was a brave and talented officer and an able man. He d. 1710, aged 67. Genealogical history of the town of Reading, Mass., p. 115-116.

"Major Jeremiah Sweyne, born in 1643 was a doctor and was at one time assistant to the Colonial Governor. In 1688 Major Swayne was Commissioned as Commander-in-chief of all Colonial forces in an expedition against the Kennebec and Eastern Indians and their French confederates."
