Notes for Sir William Brereton
William Brereton was the seventh son of nine born to his parents. He became a groom of the King's chamber by 1521 and just three years later a groom of the privy chamber. This provided him with a substantial royal salary as well as power with having such a position. His wife Elizabeth was widowed from her husband, John Savage. Sir John Savage had lost his family's vast property and wealth to the crown following debt and mismanagement.

William Brereton married Elizabeth securing the properties that had come from John Savage's ancestors namely his grandfather, Sir John Savage of Clifton. Elizabeth's father was Charles, Earl of Worcester who was a cousin to King Henry VIII. So even more grants were bestowed upon the newly married couple which secured the Savage properties to William as well as Elizabeth's wardship for an heir.

William was eventually accused of adultery with the King's wife Anne Boleyn and killed while proclaiming his innocence.

His last words were reported as, "I have offended God and the King; pray for me" but he maintained he was innocent of the charges against him. At the time of his arrest, his lands were valued at £1,236 12s. 8d. On June 20, 1536, his widow was granted "all the goods, chattels, rents, fees, and annuities belonging to the said William at the time of his attainder." Although Sir William Brereton was reportedly a "seducer of women" in his younger days, Elizabeth believed him when he denied having had an affair with Anne Boleyn. In her will, Elizabeth left her son a gold bracelet "the which was the last token his father sent me."
