Notes for James William McCarty
James left his tobacco farm during the gold rush of 1847 and drove a team of oxen to California. To get back to Missouri he worked on a cattle ship, going around Cape Horn, up the East Coast of South America to the Gulf of Mexico, up the Mississippi River and the Missouri River until he reached his Missouri home. During the Civil War, he carried the U. S. Mail, missing a call to service because of the misspelling of his name.
