Book, "Bent Twigs in Jefferson County" by Jean Patterson Bible, Rogersville, TN; East Tennessee Printing Co., Inc. (1991) states: Those arriving in 1783 included Thomas Jarnagin (sometimes spelled "Jarnigan"), James Hill, Wesley White, James Randolph, Joseph Copeland, Robert Gentry, and james Hubbard. Captain Jarnigan settled four miles above the mouth of the Nalochucky on the north side, and it was recorded that 1784 "Thomas Jarnagin hath leave to build a mill on Long Creek." James hill and family put down roots a mile lower down, Wesley White immediately opposite Taylor's Bend, Robert Gentry four miles above Dandridge, and Joseph Copeland south of the river seven miles above Dandridge. They were soon followed by others, including Ninian Chamberlain, Thomas Snoddy and Matthew Wallace in the vicinity of Long Creek. In 1785, Col. George Doherty settled several miles west of Dandridge near today's Shady Grove. In about 17(8)9, Michael Branner, ancestor of John Casper and John Roper Branner, settled in the Dandridge area with his family, as did Shadrach and Abednego Inman with large land grants.

It is believed that Ninian had 2 older brothers in the colonies when he arrived. James in Virginia and Jeremiah in Pa. The naming pattern of Jeremiah's children follow the same pattern as Ninian's family. Because of the time gap between when Andrew was born and Mary, the first daughter, was born, I assume that there were two wives of Ninian. The first wife being the mother of the boys and the second being the mother of the girls. Which wife was named Janet is not known, possibly both were. It is possible for one woman to be the mother of all the children, if she started having children at the age of 13 or 14, which would make her close to 50 when the last child was born, but highly unlikely.
