Notes for Rev William Garrett
William was a lawyer in Jefferson Co., TN and a preacher around east TN. In 1803 he built Beechwood Hall in Cocke Co., TN. Beechwood is registered aas a National Historical plantation.

An unidentified we source says: "William was a lawyer in Cocke Co., TN, but started preaching in 1822 after being converted in 1813. In 1832 he moved to Giles Co., TN. In 1836 he was in Nashville and in 1850 he was living with his son, Col. William Garrett, in Cossa Co., AL. He died at the home of his son Abraham Maury Garrett. ... He settled early in Cocke Co., TN as a lawyer and preacher. Licensed to practice law in Jefferson Co., TN in 1796 he was the first clerk of Cocke Co., TN and held that post until 1831. About 1810 he left the bar. He was instrumental in sending flat boats with supples from Newport, TN to New Orleans during the War of 1812. The route home was along the Natches Trail. When he got home he only had paper saying the government owed him money. To get paid he had to go to Washington, DC to get his paayment in gold. In 1822 he and his wife joined the Methodist Church and he preached for 10 years. He lived in Giles Co., T between 1832-1836. He then went to Nashville, TN in 1829 and was recorder there for 12 years and after his wife died he moved to Cossa Co., AL to live with his son Williiam H. Garrett." {Giles Co., TN was the home of his brother Eli's family}
