Notes for Robert Kilgore Jr
In the book "Charles Kilgore of King's Mountain" by Hugh M. Addington (1935, Chapter 2, pg 10), there is an extract of writings by Judge G. W. Kilgore in 1911 that is quoted, "About the year 1763 five of the great-great-grandsons of Lord Douglas Kilgore, together with a number of Scotch and Irish emigrants came to North America. These five Kilgore brothers seemed to have settled in the northwestern part of North Carolina. Some of them, at least, were married in Ireland before coming to America". He also writes that all five brothers participated in the battle of King's Mountain in North Carolina and the five brothers were: Hiram, Robert, William and James. But while the book is helpful errors do exist. Example: Robert's brother Charles is shown that is married Winnie Clayton. It was later proven that Robert married Winifred/Winnie and not Charles. Further any relationship to Lord Doughlas has not been proven. The Clan Douglas Society of North America (CDSNA) accepted the Kilgore/Kilgour surname as a sept in July 1985 but the Kilgore surname is also listed as a sept of clan MacDuff. The CDSNA website has an interesting theory. http://clandouglassociety.org/kilgore
