Notes for Leander Green Crowell
Many records show him as being born in COFFEE CO., TN. rather than SMITH CO., TN.1
An article appearing in the Van Buren County Democrat (Clinton, AR) on 17 August, 1882 is as follows: " We have been unable to learn the full particulars of the difficulty between Leander Crowell and Calvin Harris on last Monday, in which the former was dangerously, if not fatally wounded. There was no person present when the difficulty occurred, except Crowell and Harris. Mr. Crowell was thought to be in a dying condition on Monday night. Magistrate Wm. Hardy being present for the purpose of taking his dying declarations. We are told that Mr. Crowell stated that he and Harris met early in the morning on a mountain road, near where they both reside, and passed common-place friendly conversation, and that several hours afterwards, Crowell returning home by another road overtook Harris, who was sitting on a log near the road with a gun in his hands and appeared to be adjusting the lock or trigger of the gun. Crowell asked, "What are you doing now?" to which Harris replied, "Fixing my gun; and if you will wait for me, I will go with you." Crowell waited and they walked on together three or four hundred yards when, without any notice or provocation, Harris turned upon Crowell, and inflicted a blow upon him with the butt of his gun striking him upon the back of the head, crushing into the skull, and felling him to the ground. After some time Crowell recovered sufficiently to attempt to rise. He saw Harris not far off, but being unable to maintain himself, he again sank to the ground. Harris seeing him fall ran away and has not been seen since. We have no information as to the cause of the difficulty; we only give what we have heard to be the circumstances." Further down the same column; "John Hall Rises to Remark" "...That Leander Crowell was badly, if not fatally wounded by Calvin Harris on last Monday. That Harris escaped through the assistance of Sunny Roberts." The 1870 Federal Census shows him listed as GREEN CROWELL, married to MARY (maiden name MARBURY) and a two year old son named CHARLES. GREEN is shown as being 25 years old, making him born about 1845. This would verify other documented information showing LEANDER'S birthdate as 1845. This would definitely be LEANDER GREEN CROWELL. He could have been known as GREEN CROWELL in order to differentiate between himself and his uncle LEANDER CROWELL. -- Obituary states he was born in Smith Co. TN. Ken Ackley records show him born in Smith Co. TN. Other records show him born in , Coffee, TN. George Burton Crowell "Burt", a grandson, states that whenever Leander would come to visit their home he would always have Grandma, Emma Inez Bigelow Crowell, fix him oyster stew. This was his favorite dish and apparently Grandma could fix it better than anyone he knew. -- Other records show death date of 7 Dec. 1921. -- He was a Civil War veteran, enlisting at age 17 on September 30, 1862 at Tullahoma, Coffee, Tennessee; serving 4 years under command of Colonel Freemans Battery, Forrests Cavalry, as an artillaryman in the Confederate forces which surrendered at or near Greensboro, North Carolina in 1865. He served in Captain Huggins Company. He had been captured at Parker's Cross Roads December 31, 1862 and was exchanged July 24, 1863, at Gratiot Street Military Prison (St. Louis, MO.) The prisoner of war records also show that one Leander Crowell, private, was captured in Carroll County, Tennessee, January 1, 1863, and was exchanged at City Point, Virginia, August 5, 1863, the name Leander Crowell not having been found on the rolls on file in this office of Company D (or any other company) of the 3d (Forrest's) Regiment Tennessee Cavalry. He was part of the Tennessee Volunteers. He applied for and received a military pension in 1913. His petition for pension states that he received no wounds during the war. The reason for his petition was, "(c) and on account of old age (State age) 68 years old and broken down. I am incapacitated to labor, and have no means sufficient for my support. (State if applicant has any property in wife's name, or if he has children or any other relations who should support him) 4 children not able to support me." Confederate records list him as L.C. Crowell, not as Leander. He is shown on the 1870 census as GREEN CROWELL, age 25 and a farmer. The 1920 census shows his as 74 years old and living with his son JOHN and John's wife MYRTLE (OWEN) and five of their children. LEANDER is shown as a widower.
