Notes for Johann Dietrich Wunderlich
John Dietrich Wunderlich, the oldest child of Johannes and Maria Elizabeth (Siechele) Wunderlich, was born near Palmyra, Lebanon county, PA, on November 11, 1757. He was baptized December 10, 1757, the witnesses being J.D. Morrell and wife.
He later removed with his parents to Middlesex township, Cumberland county, where he purchased a farm on which he lived until his death which occurred December 10, 1829. He married, April 1, 1784, Anna Margaret, daughter of Peter and Anna Margaret (Stoever) Yetter. She was born in Lebanon county July 19, 1766, and died May 11, 1840.
During the Revolutionary War, John Dietrich Wunderlich, in 1777, along with his father, served as a private in Captain Samuel Cochran's company of the Fourth Battalion, Lancaster county militia, commanded by Colonel Robert Elder. September 1780 he is recorded as a private in Captain Michael Simpson's company of the First Pennsylvania Regiment, commanded by Colonel Thomas Robinson.
John Dietrich Wunderlich was an honest, upright man and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. His last years were spent in quietude on his farm, where he was always glad to receive his relatives and other friends who felt free to call upon him.
He and his wife were members of the Evangelical Lutheran church at Carlisle, PA. His wife survived him after his death and removed to Carlisle where she spent the remainder of her days.
Both he and his wife were originally interred in The First Lutheran Burying Ground of Carlisle, PA, (S. Hanover St and Chestnut Ave), and re-interred in Old Graveyard in the Church Plot in the southeast corner in 1891. John & Anna had eight children:
Catherine, Jane, John, Frederick W., Susanna, Anna Margaret, Mary, and Daniel Wunderlich.
