William Dejernette Maloney was born in Ireland (possibly County Claire) in about 1780. He came to this country from Ireland in about 1803, settling in South Carolina. He married Elizabeth Pickens about 1804 in the Pendleton District, South Carolina. [From the Maloney Family Biographical Record, 1806-1974, Charles A. and Louise B. Fowler]

In 1810 the Maloney family lived in Pendleton District, South Carolina1283 and in 1820 they lived in Abbeville Co., South Carolina1284

In 1827 William participated in the Georgia Land Lottery:

In 1830 they lived in Gwinnett Co., Georgia and in1850 in Marietta District, Cobb Co., Georgia.

In October 1857 the Maloney family, after months of planning, organized a company and headed for Texas. There were reported to be 66 people in the party, comprised of the elderly parents, William and Elizabeth Maloney in their mid-seventies; Samuel Norwood Maloney, his wife and ten children, a grandchild, and seventeen slaves; William P. Maloney, his wife and eight children and six slaves; Israel and Mary Maloney with eight children, one slave named "Dorcas," and her son Artie; and some friends: John Brown and his wife and two men named Bradley and Mauldin.

It took three months to make the journey by horseback plus ten mule drawn wagons and a carriage in which the elders rode.

Upon arrival in Texas, William and Sam settled in Hunt County, near Commerce and Wolfe City, paying fifty-cents an acre for his land. William P. apparently settled in Wood County, near Emory, as he is shown there in the 1860 Federal Census. Israel settled his family near Ladonia, in Fannin County.
