Notes for William Chandler
There is a mystery about what happened to this William Chandler and family when he left Andover around 1697. Records show that, three months after his father, Thomas, transferred the deed to the homestead he had provided for William to William, he sold it all. The assumption elsewhere has been that he then left Andover. His wife, the widow Eleanor Chandler, appears in west Chelmsford as a charter member of the new church there in 1728. (West Chelmsford was then split off and incorporated as Westford in 1729.) His son William had 5 children born in Billerica and then a final child born in Westford in 1725.
There is this notation in the "Andover Massachusetts town meeting records 1656-1709":
At a lawful meeting January 1st 1699-1700, Capt. Christopher Osgood chosen as moderator for this meeting. ... Granted to the widow Eleanor Chandler six acres of land upon the right hand of the way to goodman Blanchards, between Willam Ballards and William Johnsons, not prejudicing the way to Crane meadow swamp. This land was given in consideration of cost in her estate.
There is no record of any other Eleanor Chandler in Andover at this time (except her daughter, who was 11).
This very probably indicates that William Chandler died within a few months at most prior to the date of the meeting, so some time in late 1699. It also indicates that the family was tied to Andover at the time, though the town meeting may have just felt an obligation to the family even if they had moved on.

Children: William Chandler Jr, Eleanor Chandler Walker, Benjamin Chandler, and Moses Chandler.11
