Notes for Rev Benjamin C Stevenson
Benjamin Cox Stevenson was born 21 Dec 1804 in Woodford County, Kentucky, the second son of James and Margaret ‘Peggy’ (Campbell) Stevenson. He and his siblings Alexander, Elizabeth, Margaret(ta), Joanna, and Mary ‘Polly’ were baptized together at Pisgah Presbyterian Church on 15 Oct 1816.

His father James, wounded as a soldier in the War of 1812, was an invalid for the rest of his life. Benjamin’s elder brother Alexander Campbell Stevenson became the breadwinner for the family at an early age (he also became a physician, Indiana state legislator, and inductee to Purdue University’s Hall of Fame). In 1826 the Stevenson family removed to Putnam County, Indiana.

Although baptized a Presbyterian, Benjamin became a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, a decision which may have been influenced by his family’s strong anti-slavery sentiments. He had charge of the M.E. church at Madison, Indiana where, on 15 Sep 1831, he became the husband of the widow Sarah Grover Goode, daughter of the town’s founder, Col. John Paul.

Their marriage was the briefest—and last--of Sarah’s three conjugal commitments. In less than two months, Benjamin had died.
