Was a veteran of the American Revolutionary War.
478Anthony Weyer was born 20 Sept 1761 and baptized at 2 p.m. on 27 Sept 1761 according to the church records of the Christ Lutheran Church of York, Pennsylvania. The records lists his name as Anton and his mother's parents, Antony and Catharine Elizabeth Wolf, were listed as the sponsors. He was evidently named after his grandfather Anton, Antoni or also called Anthony Wolf.
Anthony Weyer Sr. was a Private in the First {Captain Reinhard Bott} Company, Third Battalion, York County militia, according to a return for the year 1780, and also in one dated 20 Nov 1782.
According to information supplied by Bill Brewer, a distant cousin, Anthony Sr. married Catherine Kurtz on 25 Oct 1783 and that they had the 10 children that I list, no source is given. This information seems to have been passed down from generation to generation and I believe that portions of the information may have originated, possibly as early as 1874, when Anthony’s descendants were gathering up information to help distribute the "Weyer fortune". I have used this report extensively as a guide to begin research on branches of Anthony’s family and will be referring to this report often, so from this point on I will call it "Bill Brewer's genealogical report". Although this report does not give a marriage location, I would think that Anthony Sr. And Catherine’s marriage probably took place in York, Pennsylvania. Seven of the children listed in this family group were heirs, or parents of heirs, listed in the probate records of Barnett Weyer, Sr. Who died without issue in Highland County Ohio in 1847. The probate receipts list the following descendants of Anthony Sr. The heirs of Anthony Weyer Jr, Barnett Weyer Jr., James Weyer, Mary Redkey, the heirs of Charles Weyer, Priscilla Spangler and Rosanna Hartman. Anthony Sr.'s portion of Barnett’s estate was divided in eights, then this would leave one more child unaccounted for, who must of lived until Barnett’s death or had surviving children. The three children listed in the information by Bill Brewer, but not listed in Barnett's probate records are Catherine, Lydia and Susannah. I have found some information on Catherine and found that Lydia had died in 1818. I have found no information on Susannah. My guess would be that Susannah, like Lydia, died at an early age and the last portion of the estate went to Catherine Leininger or her heirs. The birth years of Anthony’s children who do not have an exact date are an educated guess on my part.
Anthony lived for some time in Baltimore, Maryland. According to Bill Brewer's genealogical report, Anthony’s first son, Anthony Jr., was born in 1784 in Baltimore, Maryland. According to a book called "household guide, Guernsey County, Ohio" and Ohio census records, another of Anthony Sr.'s sons, James, was born in Baltimore in 1788. Barnett supposedly born in 1786, Mary born in 1790, Priscilla born in 1795 and Rosanna born around 1800 were all born in Pennsylvania according to the 1850 Ohio census.
In the 1790 census of Baltimore County, Maryland there is an entry for a John Weyer. We know Anthony lived for a time in Baltimore and as seen later, we also know that he went by the name of john Anthony. So this is probably our john. It lists the household as two males under 16, one male over 16 and one female. Of course the couple over 16 is john Anthony and Catherine. The two males under 16 is a question mark. According to the information that I have, there should of been three, Anthony Jr., Barnett and James.
Sometime in the 1790s Anthony moved his family to Pennsylvania. This is known because between 1796 and 1800 john Anthony Weyer and wife Catherine bought and sold lots in Taylorstown, Washington County, Pennsylvania.
In the 1800 census of Washington County, Pennsylvania there is a listing for a john Anthony weirs 2 1 1 0 1 / 3 1 0 1 0. If this is our Anthony Weyer there are two discrepancies. The first is that the census says john Anthony was over 45, where our Anthony would be 38. The second discrepancy is in the ages of his sons. According to the information that i have Anthony should have one son, Charles, under 10, and three sons, Anthony, Barnett and James, between the ages of 10 and 16. This census entry has two sons under 10, one son between 10 and 16 and one son over 16. The women of this household fit almost perfectly with the information we have on Anthony’s family. The entry has a woman between the ages of 26 and 45, (Catherine would have been 38). There were three daughters under the age of 10, which fits Anthony’s daughters Catherine, Priscilla and Rosanna. The entry also has a daughter between 10 and 16. Mary Elizabeth would of been almost 10 at this time. I can not be positive that this is our Anthony but several factors do point in that direction. 1. 4 sons and 4 daughters, which fits perfectly with Anthony's family in 1800. 2. Lands records of this time mention a john Anthony Weyer and wife Catherine in Washington County, Pennsylvania. 3. Later church records in canton, Ohio list Anthony Weyer as john Anthony in some of the church records.
Due to the fact that both the 1790 and 1800 censuses show a discrepancy in the ages of the Weyer boys, i feel that one of Anthony's sons has an error in the birthdate I have listed. In both the 1790 and 1800 censuses the entries show two sons being born between 1780 and 1790, our information has three, Anthony 1784, Barnett 1786 and James 1788. If i had to choose which one was incorrect i would pick Barnett. Anthony was almost certainly born in Maryland, James listed his place of birth as Maryland in the 1850, 1860 and 1880 Ohio censuses and Barnett lists his place of birth as Pennsylvania in both the 1850 and 1860 censuses. I would think that once the move was made to Washington County, Pennsylvania the family would not move back to Maryland for the birth of James. Since Barnett lists his place of birth as Pennsylvania i would assume he is the third son born after Anthony and James. In the 1860 Ohio census Barnett lists his age as 70, which would fit in with my conclusions, but in the 1850 Ohio census Barnett lists his age as 63, which fits in with the other researchers information. For the time being i am leaving Barnett as the second child and leave my suppositions for other researchers to ponder over.
Anthony has not been found in the 1810 census. I have checked the census indexes for Maryland and Pennsylvania Ohio and Virginia with no luck. If he lived in Ohio at this time it would not be surprising that he cannot be found because almost all of the 1810 Ohio census is missing. I feel that he may have lived in highland County Ohio for a short time period around 1810 - 1812. The only clue i have to substantiate this speculation is that two of Anthony's children were married in highland County, Barnett and Mary both in 1812. Anthony is listed in the muster roles as adjutant of a Ohio militia unit in the war of 1812. In the biographical records of his grandson Hiram, it states that Anthony was a chaplain in the United States army during the war of 1812. It is possible that Anthony entrusted his family to his brother Jacob or Daniel in Highland County while he went off to war.
In a book that contains the church records of the Lutheran congregation in Canton, Ohio, it states that the church was organized around 1814. The first listing of Anthony as a pastor is a marriage record of a wedding he presided over on 7 Dec 1813. He is listed as the pastor in numerous weddings and baptisms throughout the period 1813 until his death in 1829. It is interesting to note that besides being called Anthony Weyer in these church records, he was also listed as john Anthony Weyer and Antonius Weyer.
I have heard from a researcher that Anthony was a traveling preacher, riding on horseback throughout eastern Ohio. There is suppose to be a land record of Anthony's in Guernsey County, but as of yet i have not located it. Two of his children were married in Guernsey County so this is possible.
In 1816 and again in 1818 Anthony officiated at the weddings of two of his daughters, Priscilla and Rosanna, in Canton Ohio.
In the 1820 census there is an Anthony wire listed on page 172 in canton, stark County, Ohio. The census lists one male over 45 (Anthony would of been 59) and one female over 45 (Catherine would of been 58).
In the April 3rd 1829 issue of the "Ohio repository and stark County gazette" is the following obituary: " with feelings of heartfelt sorrow we are called upon to record the death of our aged and beloved brother in Christ, the reverend Anthony Weyer, late pastor of the Lutheran congregation in canton and vicinity. He died at the residence of Mr. Troxal, in Plain Township on Monday evening the 30th ult. In the 67th year of his age - more than 18 of which had been occupied in the official service of the church. His constitution had been gradually declining for some years, from the great exertion and fatigue of mind and body, which he underwent to benefit his flock, until he finally sunk into the arms of death. His mortal remains were interred on the 1st inst. The greatest eulogium upon his character was the immense crowd - the hundreds who thronged around the silent grave, to pay a last tribute of respect to his departed worth. The great and universal sorrow, which pervaded generally when the death of this good man was announced, reminded us forcibly of the exalted virtues of a man devoted to the service of his god, to benefiting his fellow man. The departure of this worthy servant of the lord is made still more lamentable by the consideration that the wants and calls of the church for ministers of the gospel, in this western country, are so great that the laborers in the vineyard are wanted. But we hope that not withstanding the lord's ways are inscrutable, his church will not suffer."
Other researchers have looked for probate records for Anthony in stark County, but have not found any.
Anthony and his wife Katherine are buried in Warstler Lutheran Church Cemetery in Stark County, Ohio.
