2According to a story told to Fr. Benedict Neenan in 1974 by Viletta Thomas and Lavinia Morrow,
George worked for the Chase Candy Company. Once while catching a train (like all traveling salesmen he
waited till the train started moving to jump on), he slipped and one foot was run over by the train. Both
he and his parents refused to have the foot amputated despite pleas from his brother, John. There was no
hospital in St. Joseph and their doctor was a homeopath so perhaps the decision not to amputate did not
seem as irresponsible then as it would today. But gangrene set in and George died a few weeks later.
